Phonics

At Princetown Primary our phonics teaching scheme is Read Write Inc (RWI). This systematic phonics scheme supports our reading and writing in Foundation, Year One and Year Two.  From Year Two onwards, the school teaches spelling and grammar using Babcock’s No Nonsense Spelling and No Nonsense Grammar Programmes. First children learn the English alphabetic code.  They learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words.  Then they learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes eg ay, ai and eigh.  The children experience success from the very beginning because they read books that are closely matched to their developing knowledge of phonics and include the ‘tricky’ words they have learned.  The children re-read the stories and their reading gains fluency and expression, thus increasing their confidence and enjoyment of reading.
